The recent emergence of widespread generative artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, has led to instructors and institutions facing questions around what role AI could and should have in the classroom.  Generative AI tools present opportunities for innovation but they can also pose challenges to learning and to academic integrity. With instructors at liberty to determine if and how these tools are included or prohibited in their courses, we face important questions: should we include artificial intelligence tools in our courses? How can we do this in a way that is appropriate? In what situations might we prohibit their use?

This forum aims to provide a conversational space for sharing the diverse approaches taken in classrooms, departments and Faculties during this the Winter 2022/23 session. How have instructors across UBC’s Faculties been using generative AI tools? Have departments set up guidelines or best practices? What strategies and rationales have they been using to mitigate their usage? The forum will address topics including approaches taken in the syllabus, creative classroom application, mitigation techniques, designing assessments that incorporate AI, and upholding academic integrity in different disciplines and Faculties. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from other disciplines, share ideas and approaches from the past term and walk away with a list of good practices.

This panel is aimed at instructors while a similar student panel is being planned for the Fall.
